"Grandad reminisces about the old computer he worked on when he was young. But more was happening ... Under the floor was another world, whose inhabitants kept careful watch on the humans and their computer." [Book cover, The First Computer Mouse ]

These are words from The First Computer Mouse, a book that introduces the first digital computer in Australia to children.

The colourful book - beautifully illustrated by Deborah Koolen - incorporates fact, fantasy and humour in ways that will intrigue children and provide an excellent introduction to the study of computers for all primary levels.

The First Computer Mouse takes children on a journey exploring how computers have changed since they were first developed.

The book is aimed at four to seven year olds.

The author, David Demant, works in the Technology Department at Museum Victoria.

David was so inspired by one of the museum's collection items, CSIRAC, that he decided to write The First Computer Mouse.

CSIRAC (pronounced sigh-rack) stands for Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation Automatic Computer.

It is the only complete first-generation computer still in existence and was designed and built in Australia.

CSIRAC is currently on display at Melbourne Museum.

CSIRAC was first switched on in 1949 and was switched off for the last time in 1964.

In terms of physical size, this computer fills a whole room. Today, a simple pocket organiser has similar power to CSIRAC.

In 1964, the first prototype computer mouse was developed used in conjunction with a computer screen. In 1970, the inventor Douglas Englebart received a patent for the wooden shell with two metal wheels.

Simon Townsend, host of children's show Wonder World, commented on The First Computer Mouse: "Imagination and enchantment in a quirky technological tale. Lovely!"

Graham Base, children’s book author and illustrator says "The First Computer Mouse appeals to the sense of fantasy in us all. Read and enjoy!"
